New Website, New Outlook

It's Been a While, Why Now?
As Positype has matured, the need for a new website, a new platform, and a new outlook post-pandemic became evident. The previous site served us well, but as we grew and the industry evolved, it was clear that a more expansive and flexible experience was necessary. We could no longer behave and present the library like a boutique foundry would. As such, we wanted to provide our users with a platform that not only met their current needs but also anticipated future demands—a lot has changed over the past few years, and Positype needs to present things at the same scale as it produces—and customers, agencies, and creatives are looking for independent foundries to provide more. This new site is a blend of modern functionality with subtle nods to successful approaches from our past.

New License Categories and Better, Adjusted Pricing Tiers
One of the most significant changes with our new site is the introduction of new license categories and improved pricing tiers. Our customers have diverse needs, and our old pricing model was too rigid to accommodate everyone efficiently. The new structure is more flexible and tailored, ensuring that all our clients, from independent designers to large corporations, can find a license that suits their project and budget. This change reflects our commitment to IP accessibility and customer satisfaction.

A Faster, More Enjoyable Platform
Speed and user experience were top priorities in this redesign. The new platform is significantly faster, with improved navigation and search capabilities. We've streamlined the user journey, making it easier to find, review, and purchase typefaces. We didn’t lose the posters nor did we minimize their value, Flont is still there (our OpenType-enabled live specimen view), and Glyph Grid is a bit grid-ier, but we also added comprehensive weight and style strings to better grasp the offerings of a typeface quickly.

Animated Logo, Why?
That’s all me. There's no deeper reason or deep dive into the intersection of design and technology, blah, blah—it's simply because, well, why not? It’s fun and a little flair never hurt a foundry.

Why Release So Many New Typefaces at Once?
This question has come up quite a bit. The biggest reason is a bit personal. I've been battling health-related issues for myself and my family since the pandemic. This, combined with a general malaise with the industry, left me without that urge/desire/need to release new typefaces, even though I never stopped working on them. When the process for redesigning the website began a year ago, I finally had an excuse and often just said ‘I can release that with the new site.’ Funny thing though, I kept saying that and the reality of the backlog became apparent. It made more sense to view the entirety of the new releases as a volume of work and to drop it all at once… more than doubling the catalog. So, there’s a bit of WOW but there’s also a more robust and complete feeling to many of these extensions and redrawings. It’s the only way I know to say ‘hi, I missed you all and I hope you missed me some’.

Reassessing My Role in the Type Industry
This entire process has been one of self- and foundry-examination. It has forced me to reassess what my role should be in the type industry—not just as an independent foundry owner but as a seasoned creative focused on the development and success of rising talent (I’ll write on that more soon). I want Positype to be an independent platform that supports and nurtures new designers while continuing to push the boundaries of responsible and timeless type design. This new website is a step in that direction, offering more resources, better support, and a stronger community for all our users. I’m finally ok with what’s out there, so, let’s go.

Thank you for being part of our community and for your continued support…
