The huai is among the oldest forms of legal gambling in Thailand, tracing its roots back to the reign of King Rama III in the early 1800s. What began as a Chinese flower-ticket game in old Bangkok has grown into one of the most beloved popular traditions in the country today.

The Thai lottery, known throughout the country simply as huai, occupies a place in daily life that visitors from other countries often find surprising. Drawings are held twice a month, on the first and the sixteenth, and the days leading up to each draw fill with a particular kind of quiet excitement. Vendors set up their familiar metal-framed stalls on sidewalks and at the corners of markets, the long pink and white tickets fanned across their displays in careful rows. Customers approach slowly, scan the numbers, and select with the deliberation of people who have been doing this for years. The cultural roots of huai run deep. The game traces back to the reign of King Rama III in the early nineteenth century, when a Chinese-influenced ticket lottery operated in old Bangkok. From that small beginning, the practice spread across the country and eventually became one of only two forms of gambling formally permitted by Thai law. The official government lottery is administered by the Government Lottery Office and accounts for a significant portion of state revenue, while an unofficial parallel system known as huai tai din, the underground lottery, continues to flourish in the spaces between the official drawings. Numbers themselves carry weight in Thai life. Dreams are interpreted, license plates are studied, monks are consulted, and the small daily events of the world are quietly read as clues. The lottery is not only a hope of sudden wealth. It is also a long conversation with chance.
