The fashion industry today operates as one of the most truly international enterprises in the modern economy. A garment that begins as cotton in one country may be spun in another, dyed in a third, cut and sewn in a fourth, finished in a fifth, and sold in markets on every continent. The major fashion capitals of Paris, Milan, New York, London, and Tokyo still set much of the rhythm of the industry, hosting the seasonal weeks that draw editors, buyers, and photographers from every corner of the world. Yet the actual work of fashion has long since spread far beyond those centers. Behind every collection that walks a major runway lies a vast and largely invisible network of suppliers, manufacturers, and skilled artisans. Italian leather workshops, French embroidery ateliers, Indian textile mills, Vietnamese garment factories, and Chinese trim suppliers all play essential parts in bringing a single season to life. The creative direction may come from a studio in Paris, but the hands that execute the work are spread across dozens of countries, each contributing techniques refined over generations. This international structure has made fashion one of the most economically significant industries in the world, and one of the most complicated to understand. The garment on the rack carries a history far longer than the season it represents.

Although the fashion industry developed first in Europe and America, it has grown over the past century into a thoroughly global enterprise, with creative centers, production hubs, and consumer markets spread across every inhabited continent. The great couture houses of Paris and the heritage tailoring traditions of London still anchor the industry's history, but the daily work of fashion now happens in cities that would have been considered peripheral just a few decades ago. Seoul, Lagos, São Paulo, Mumbai, and Shanghai have all emerged as significant creative and commercial centers, each with their own evolving design vocabulary, their own emerging brands, and their own influential fashion weeks. The structure of the industry reflects this global reach. A modern luxury house may have its creative direction in Paris, its archives in Florence, its leather production in Tuscany, its silk weaving in Como, its retail flagships in Tokyo and New York, and its fastest-growing customer base in cities the founders never imagined. Mass-market fashion operates on an even broader geographic canvas, with design teams in one country, production in several others, and distribution networks that touch nearly every retail market on earth. The seasonal calendar that once revolved around four cities now answers to dozens, and the conversations that shape next year's collections happen across time zones and languages. What has not changed, despite all this expansion, is the essential character of the work. Fashion remains a craft built on careful attention to material, proportion, and the cultural moment. A skilled pattern maker in Milan and a skilled finisher in Hanoi are engaged in the same long tradition of making clothes that fit the human body and express something about the time they were made. The industry that has grown around them is more complicated than it has ever been, more international, more competitive, and more visible. But the moment when a finished garment leaves the workshop and travels out into the world remains, in its essentials, the same moment it has always been.
Description
Yes, finally. This one took the most time and the most restarting. Years went into imagining what Lust Text should look like and how it should structurally behave in order to truly improve upon a setting that includes any of the Lust typefaces. I approached it as much from the side of the type designer, as I did a potential user. The flow, the warmth, the personality needed to be there, but all of the excess had to be removed responsibly. In the process, and in need of inspiration, I looked backward to historical artifacts and precedent. In each early Lust Text approach, the solution was lackluster and/or vanilla and not actually a ‘Lust’ typeface. The exercise was not in vain though. By exploring past examples, I found my footing drawing for media now and how it might be used later—all the while, producing seamless, elegant curves and restrained indulgence (that sounds almost silly to say, but I like it).

The Lust Collection is the culmination of 5 years of exploration and development, and I am very excited to share it with everyone. When the original Lust was first conceived in 2010 and released a year and half later, I had planned for a Script and a Sans to accompany it. The Script was released about a year later, but I paused the Sans. The primary reason was the amount of feedback and requests I was receiving for alternate versions, expansions, and ‘hey, have you considered making?’ and so on. I listen to my customers and what they are needing… and besides, I was stalling with the Sans. Like Optima and other earlier high-contrast sans, they are difficult to deliver responsibly without suffering from ill-conceived excess or timidity. The new Lust Collection aggregates all of that past customer feedback and distills it into 6 separate families, each adhering to the original Lust precept of exercises in indulgence and each based in large part on the original 2010 exemplars produced for Lust. I just hate that it took so long to deliver, but better right, than rushed, I imagine.
